A guide to hearing loop best practice

Home // Info Centre // Introduction to hearing loops // A guide to hearing loop best practice

Hearing loop technology has existed for decades and is relatively simple in its most basic form. It is however, very easy to incorrectly specify a system type and components for certain applications, or to make errors when installing the system. Both of which can result in a system that does not provide a beneficial experience for its users, or meet the requirements of the internationally recognised Standard for Hearing Loop performance (IEC 60118-4).

Any person intending to specify, design or install a hearing loop should know the requirements of the IEC 60118-4 Standard relating to; field strength, frequency response, background noise and subjective testing.
Remember: If it’s not working to the requirements of IEC 60118-4 then it’s not working properly!

Copies of the Standard are available from the IEC webstore (https://webstore.iec.ch/publication/798),  or British Standard Institute website. Training is available from reputable Hearing Loop manufacturers and the Institute of Sound & Communication Engineers.

It is for the above reasons that we have collated some of the best practises with regards to the installation and maintenance of hearing loops together in this whitepaper aptly entitled ‘Hearing Loops: A Guide to Best Practice’.

This guide gives an insight into the following:

  • The key requirements of a Hearing Loop system
  • A guide to hearing loop system solutions by application
  • Area coverage hearing loop do’s and don’ts
  • Fixed counter hearing loop do’s and don’ts
  • Portable desktop hearing loops
